Not a big surprise, this has been known to bros (lol) for a long time. :D

“This is the first study to show that protein ingested immediately prior to sleep is effectively digested and absorbed, thereby stimulating muscle protein synthesis and improving whole-body protein balance during post-exercise, overnight recovery.” – Protein Ingestion Prior To Sleep Improves Post-Exercise Overnight Recovery.

If you want more muscle, eat one of my diet desserts (diet dessert#1 / diet dessert #2) before you go to bed. They both have slow-acting casein protein in them. ;)

This is one of my favorite diet dessert recipes!

  • Mix 2 dl banana chocolate flavored casein protein (or any type of chocolate flavored casein) with low fat milk.
  • Pour the mix/mush in a bowl.
  • Garnish with banana slices.
  • Put the bowl in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes and let it thicken.
  • Stuff your face.

For the experienced pastry chef, try to put banana slices inside of the mix/mush. If you’re feeling extra indulgent, you could sprinkle some Nesquik on top. ;)

I like Antoine Valiant, he seems like a really cool guy and he also has an awesome physique. Dude is really athletic considering the amount of muscle he carries and he can actually pull off some decent tricking. Here he is with a friend (Juji? Jujimufu?) doing all kinds of stupid, hilarious stuff. This is one of the best “bodybuilding videos” I’ve seen in a really long time. It starts out a bit slow but gets quite funny from the scene where they are trying to calculate the weight of the barbel. :D

Edit. Seems like the video is blocked outside of YT, guess you have to watch it there…

Life’s little pleasures

by Forgman on February 16, 2012

I finished my night shift at 07.30 this morning. It was freeeeezing cold when I rode the bike to the bus station. Looking at this picture you can almost imagine how cold it was… but just almost. ;)

Freeeeezing cold

Freeeeezing cold

Back at my apartment I did a 35 minute brainwave entrainment session with my Proteus. It was a deep delta session and I used my light goggles and listened to binaural beats. It gave me some “quick sleep” and after that I managed to drag my ass to the gym. I really didn’t want to go today, mostly because of the cold weather and my lack of sleep. I did a leg and back workout and it went quite well.

My post workout meal was a strange mix of two different stews thrown together (pic) and whole grain rice. I also had four liverwurst sandwiches with pickles and a bowl of yogurt and muesli. I haven’t done all that much today but at least I’ve enjoyed life’s little pleasures of eating and sleeping. :)

Two 24 hour work shifts coming up, from Friday morning to Saturday morning and from Sunday morning to Monday morning. See you next week!

77 hour work week

by Forgman on February 13, 2012

Right now I’m relaxing on my couch after a long, and somewhat demanding, day of work. I’m working a total of 77 hours this week (some of it is call time but it’s still spent at work…). That’s almost “double full time”. I would lie if I said that I’m not tired after only two consecutive days of work, in fact I’m kind of beat right now, but I think I’ll feel better tomorrow. I’m going to relax for an hour or so and then go to bed early because I have to get up at 05.30 tomorrow. Not a comfortable time get out of bed but sometimes you just have to “man up” and do what you’re supposed to do.

I’ve been listening to this song on my way to work, while freezing my butt of. :/

Beautiful but cold

by Forgman on February 12, 2012

I took this picture earlier this week when I was on my way to work. It was roughly -16 degrees Celsius and all the trees were covered in frost/ice. They almost looked like trees made of glass.

It doesn’t get much easier than this:

  1. Put the strawberries in a bowl.
  2. Add cottage cheese.
  3. Enjoy your diet dessert.

For the experienced pastry chef, try adding some cinnamon. :D

Beyond The Black Rainbow – Panos Cosmatos

by Forgman on February 11, 2012

“First time film director Panos Cosmatos borrows freely from directors like Dario Argento, Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Cronenberg in this unique blend of psychological horror and science fiction. The film was screened at the Stockholm Film Festival and now the first official trailer has been released. ” – Moviezine

I really like Argento and Cronenberg (I have no idea who Jodorowsky is) and I have to see this movie. Just look at the trailer… wow.

Set in a futuristic 1983.

Potent PPARα Activator Derived from Tomato Juice

by Forgman on February 11, 2012

Here’s an interesting study from Japan. It’s a mice study but still kind of promising. Maybe I’ll start drinking a bottle of tomato juice each day and see if I’ll get shredded…

“In this study, we explored the possibility that 13-oxo-ODA acts as a PPARα agonist in vitro and whether its effect ameliorates dyslipidemia and hepatic steatosis in vivo. In vitro luciferase assay experiments revealed that 13-oxo-ODA significantly induced PPARα activation; moreover, the luciferase activity of 13-oxo-ODA was stronger than that of 9-oxo-ODA and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is a precursor of 13-oxo-ODA and is well-known as a potent PPARα activator. In addition to in vitro experiment, treatment with 13-oxo-ODA decreased the levels of plasma and hepatic triglycerides in obese KK-Ay mice fed a high-fat diet. In conclusion, our findings indicate that 13-oxo-ODA act as a potent PPARα agonist, suggesting a possibility to improve obesity-induced dyslipidemia and hepatic steatosis.” – Potent PPARα Activator Derived from Tomato Juice, 13-oxo-9,11-Octadecadienoic Acid, Decreases Plasma and Hepatic Triglyceride in Obese Diabetic Mice

I’ve read that there’s a shortage of tomato juice in Tokyo at the moment, anything you’ve noticed Johan? :D

Shirataki miracle noodles review

by Forgman on February 8, 2012

Miracle noodles, or magic noodles, are low carbohydrate and low calorie noodles made from a plant called devils tongue. The noodles are largely composed of a water-soluble dietary fiber called glucomannan and come in two versions – the traditional shirataki noodles, with ZERO NET CARBOHYDRATES, and the tofu-based shirataki noodles, with very little carbohydrates.

I bought a packet of Shirataki Miracle Noodles some time ago and thought I would give you a short review. I must have bought the tofu-based noodles because they had 14 kcal / 100 g and they also required refrigeration. The traditional shirataki noodles don’t require any refrigeration, as I understand it, and have a shelf life for up to a year.

Cooking my miracle noodles was fairly easy. First I rinsed them through running water, second I boiled them for three to five minutes.  I bought the noodles just out of curiosity and wanted to try them as they were but I think you’re supposed to put them in another dish. You could put the noodles in most stews, to make each portion less calorie dense. When I bought my noodles I got the advice to put them in meat sauce.

As I said, I wanted to try the noodles as they were… and so I did. The Miracle noodles taste absolutely nothing, which is a bit strange. A rubber band has more taste to it and I’m being serious now. I don’t know if the lack of taste is a good or a bad thing. I guess it’s a good thing if you’re going to put the noodles in another dish but it’s a bad thing if you don’t know how to flavor them. The consistency of the noodles are very strange, the noodles don’t melt in your mouth and they require a lot of chewing. Here are some pros and cons of the noodles:

Pros

  • Low carbohydrate
  • Low calorie
  • High fiber / satiating
  • No taste – suitable for stews
  • Easy to cook

Cons

  • Probably not a lot of nutrients
  • No taste – you have to flavor the noodles somehow
  • Expensive – at least five times as expensive as regular noodles ( I bought mine for 29 SEK)
